Penny King Quartet

'Penny King is a fine musician…. Her pitch is excellent, accompanied by a chrystal clear and authentic tone'

A firm favourite of Perth jazz audiences for over 20 years, Penny King defies musical classification; whilst firmly rooted in the jazz tradition, she moves effortlessly between her jazz and contemporary repertoire, adding her own touch to much-loved standards and more.

When it comes to Penny's repertoire expect the unexpected; Duke Ellington followed by Radiohead, Sonny Rollins next to Joni Mitchell, or a Crowded House favourite followed by one of Penny's original tunes and arrangements, there is something for every music lover.

Penny has played a variety of festivals including the Perth International Jazz festival, the Beaufort Street Festival, the Rottnest 'Jazz on the Rock' Festival and the York Jazz Festival. Penny moved on to the national stage in 2013, with her album Journey, recorded with her quintet, which was subsequently shortlisted for Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album at the 2014 Australian Jazz 'Bell' Awards.

Penny is delighted to be back at the Jazz By The Bay festival this year, after appearing at the inaugural festival in 2013. She will be joined by regular collaborators and leading Australian jazz musicians Pete Jeavons on bass, and Micahel Perkins on drums. They will also be joined by Harry Mitchell on piano, a rising star in the Australian jazz scene who also joined the group at the last Jazz By the Bay Festival. This will certainly be a show not to miss!

'Penny King is a fine musician…. Her pitch is excellent, accompanied by a chrystal clear and authentic tone. Her soloing is always inventive and she nails the shifts in dynamic intensity in all the right places'. Chris McNulty, Australianjazz.net, December 2014
